And so does the ribbing go.
Hat to Match

This hat was made to match the Zip Me Up sweater for my Great-Nephew's 1st Birthday.
Materials: Galway by Plymouth in 2 contrast/complimentary colors. Need help figuring out what comtrasts/compliments? 1 skein each color. Original was done in Main Color: Colornep Red, Contrast Color: Solid Cream
Needles size 7US and 8US 16" circulars and 8US dpns
Stitch Marker
Size: Child's 1-2 (But it really stretches to fit an adult's head. To make for an adult just knit to 9" before beginning decreases.
With Color CC and 7US needle, cast on 96 sts, join and knit in the round as follows:
Round 1: *k2, p2*
Repeat Round 1 until piece measures 11/2" from cast on edge.
Cut CC and Join MC, proceed as follows:
Round 1: *K2, p2*
Continue until piece measures 21/2" from cast on edge.
Change to US8 circular and repeat Round 1 until piece measures 7" from cast on edge.
Decrease rounds:
Round1: *K2, p2tog* repeat to end. (72 sts)
Round 2, 3, 4: *k2, p1* repeat to end.
Round 5: *K2tog, p1*repeat to end. (48 sts)
Round 6: *K1, p1* repeat to end.
Round7: *K3tog, p1* repeat to end. (24 sts)
Round 8: *K2tog* repeat to end. (12 sts)
Round 9: *K2tog* repeat to end. (6 sts)
Pull yarn tail through the last 6 sts and weave in ends.
My hat used the following techniques:
Cast On- Tubular Cast On
Change of colors: I did one row of knit sts with the MC yarn before continueing in 2x2 ribbing. This keeps the purl bumps from showing the CC of the last row. The wrong side of the fabric will show the color change, not the public side. This necessitated finishing the hat from the wrong side to allow the rolled up cuff to not show the wrong side of the cuff. I reveresed the decreases as follows:
Round 1: *K2tog, p2*
Round 2,3,4: Knit sts as they are
Round 5: *K1, p2tog*
Round 6: Knit sts as they are
Round 7: *K1, p3tog*
Round 8: *P2tog*
Round 9: *P2tog*
I wove the end on the outside of the hat as I held it in my hands. This was now the wrong side of the fabric.
OK, the legal stuff. If you feel the need to print this off and share it with friends, by all means, do so. Just include my copyright and don't sell it. It's freely given and should be freely shared. If you want to use this pattern to make hats to sell, you have my permission. I do not take credit for inventing the method of hat knitting, I just take credit for putting the numbers and methods together and creating this hat.
