
This roll brim hat is quick and easy, but not boring. The Checkerboard design helps to transition the colors. Add a decorative flower for a girl, or use primary colors for a boy. Sizes 6-12 months, 1-2 years and 3-4 years.
Materials: Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep in four colors: CW 201 Barn Red, CW 340 Golden Rod, CW 490 Fermi Green and CW 570 Mailbu Blue.
Needles: Size 6 US 16" circulars, Crochet Hook size H, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 5 sts and 7 rows = 1"
Instructions: Loosely cast on 72 (80, 88) sts, in Barn Red. Join in the round, placing a marker between the first and last sts. Knit in St st for 3 (31/2, 4) inches. At the beginning of the next round add the Golden Rod and follow the charts:

Repeat these 2 rows 1 more time. Drop the Barn Red and continue in St st with Golden Rod for 4 (5, 6) rows. Then join the Fermi Green and knit the previous charts using the color key of x = Golden Rod and o = Fermi Green. Repeat the charts as before, 4 rows total of Checkerboard. Drop the Golden Rod and knit 3 (4, 5) rows of Fermi Green. On next row do decreases as follows: *K7 (8, 9), k2tog* repeat to end.
Join Malibu Blue and follow the charts again, 4 rows of checkerboard, using the color key x = Fermi Green and o = Mailbu Blue. Drop the Fermi Green and continue with Malibu Blue as following: Row 1 - *K6 (7, 8), k2tog* repeat to end. Row 2 - Knit even to end of round. Repeat these 2 rounds, always knitting one less stitch between decreases, until you have 8 sts left. Cut yarn, pull through the sts to close it up, weave in ends on wrong side of hat.

The petal portions are crochet and the center is knit.

Larger Flower: With petal color and crochet hook chain 6 and form into a loop.
Round 1:Ch 2 and in the loop make 1 hdc. *Ch 3, 3 hdc* 4 times. Ch 3, 1 hdc, sl st into the top ch of the beginning of the round.
Round 2:Ch 1, into each ch 3 space of Round 1 make *1 sc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc, ch 1, sl 1 into the middle hdc of previous round, ch 1* repeat 4 more times. End with a sl st into the top ch of the beginning of the round. Cut yarn but do not weave in all ends.
Smaller Flower: With petal color and crochet hook, chain 6 and form into a loop.
Round 1: Ch 2 and in the loop make 1 hdc. *Ch 3, 3 hdc* 4 times. Ch 3, 1 hdc, sl st into the top ch of the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Ch 2, into each ch 3 space of Round 1 make *1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 tc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, ch 1, sc in the middle hdc of previous round* repeat 4 more times. End with a sc into the top ch of the beginning of the round. Cut yarn but do not weave in ends.
Center Bobble: With center color and knitting needles CO 6 sts. Work in seed stitch for 6 rows. BO in knit. Take one of the tails and thread it through each corner and pull the corners together to form a “parachute”. Cut yarn but do not weave in the ends.
Attaching to your clothing item: Take the flower base and using the central tail sew it to the item of clothing. Take the ending tail and weave it through the back of the crochet to the center to also weave it through to the back. Take the two tails from the flower center and thread them through the item to the back and weave in the tails, being sure to “imbed” the center in the middle of the flower.
